Understand PRT, TGT, PGT, PTI, PET, Physical Education Teacher, school lecturer and government-school teacher recruitment — with the qualifications, eligibility tests, age limits, selection process and preparation strategy you need.
A government teaching job is among the most respected and stable careers in India. The path is not one-size-fits-all: a primary-school teacher, a secondary TGT, a senior-secondary PGT, a Physical Education Teacher and a school lecturer each have different qualifications and exams. For Physical Education students, PTI, PET and PE Teacher posts are the most direct route, while a B.P.Ed/M.P.Ed can also open lecturer roles in some systems. This guide explains the landscape so you can choose the right target and prepare with confidence.
PRT posts teach primary classes in government and aided schools. The usual base is 12th with a two-year elementary education diploma (D.El.Ed) or equivalent, plus the relevant primary-level teacher-eligibility test where required.
TGT posts generally cover upper-primary and secondary classes in a specific subject. A bachelor's degree in the subject with a B.Ed, and the applicable TET, is the common requirement — exact details in the notification.
PGT posts teach senior-secondary classes. A master's degree in the subject with B.Ed (as specified) and the relevant eligibility test is typical. PGT Physical Education follows the PE qualification framework.
These are the core PE routes. PTI and PET are physical-training instructor/teaching posts; Physical Education Teacher covers PE curriculum delivery. Qualifications such as D.P.Ed, B.P.Ed and M.P.Ed apply as named, with NCTE recognition where required.
State school-lecturer recruitments (for example through state commissions) cover senior classes and often require a master's with NET/SET or the state eligibility standard specified.
Generic government-school teacher posts are recruited by state education departments and central schools (such as KVS/NVS-style systems), each with its own notification and portal.
CTET (central) and state TETs such as REET (Rajasthan) are required for many school-teacher posts. The level (primary/junior/senior) and whether it applies are stated in the notification. Prepare with our CBSE notes and PET preparation material.
Minimum and maximum age, and relaxation for reserved categories, women or domicile, are printed in each advertisement. There is no single fixed age limit across all recruitments.
Usually a written exam, a teacher-eligibility verification, document verification and sometimes an interview or demo lesson. PTI/PET posts may add a physical-efficiency test. The scheme of examination — papers, marks, negative marking — is in the notification.
Government teacher pay follows the official pay level/scale printed in the advertisement and applicable rules. We deliberately do not publish salary figures, because quoting a number not taken from the notification could mislead you. Always read the "Pay Scale" or "Salary" clause of the PDF.
A PE background opens PTI, PET, Physical Education Teacher and sports-coach roles in government schools, universities and departments. The PET career guide and sports government jobs page explain these routes further. Our PTI selection process page details the typical written + physical + verification stages.
