What a PET does

A Physical Education Teacher, commonly called a PET or PTI, is responsible for the physical development, health education and sports training of students in a school. The role is far wider than conducting games periods: it includes teaching the theory syllabus, maintaining fitness and health records, organising intramural and extramural competitions, coaching school teams, managing equipment and grounds, and running the annual sports calendar.

Qualifications required

• Primary and upper primary level: D.P.Ed (Diploma in Physical Education) or C.P.Ed, depending on the state's recruitment rules.
• Secondary level: B.P.Ed (Bachelor of Physical Education) after graduation, from an NCTE-recognised institution.
• Senior secondary and college level: M.P.Ed (Master of Physical Education); for college teaching, UGC NET or a Ph.D is normally required.
• Additional advantage: an NIS coaching diploma, a state or national level playing certificate, and a first aid or fitness certification.
• Teacher eligibility tests: many states require the relevant TET or state teacher eligibility examination in addition to the professional degree.

Where PETs are recruited

• Government schools: through state public service commissions, subordinate services selection boards and education department recruitment drives.
• Central government schools: Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, Sainik Schools, Army Public Schools and Railway schools.
• Private and CBSE-affiliated schools: direct recruitment by school management, usually through a demonstration lesson and interview.
• Sports academies and hostels: SAI centres, state sports schools and residential academies.
• Fitness industry: strength and conditioning, personal training and corporate wellness, for those who prefer non-teaching routes.

Selection process and physical standards

Government recruitment normally combines a written examination on physical education theory, general knowledge and teaching methodology, with a physical efficiency or proficiency test, followed by document verification and an interview or demonstration. The physical test typically includes running, a jump event and a throw event, with standards that differ by state and by gender. Sports certificates at district, state or national level usually carry weightage in the final merit list.

Salary and progression

Pay in government service follows the applicable pay commission scale for the post and level, and varies by state and by whether the appointment is at primary, secondary or senior secondary level. Progression normally runs from PET or PTI to senior teacher, then to head of the physical education department, district sports officer or education department administrative roles. In private schools the range is much wider and depends on the school and the city. Always check the current pay scale in the official recruitment notification rather than relying on figures quoted informally.

How to prepare, starting now

• Complete the right professional degree from an NCTE-recognised institution — recognition is checked at document verification and an unrecognised degree can end a candidature.
• Maintain your own fitness continuously. The physical test is not something you can prepare for in a month.
• Collect and preserve every sports participation certificate at school, district and state level.
• Study physical education theory seriously; the written paper is where most candidates are eliminated.
• Add a coaching diploma or a specialisation in one sport to stand out in private school recruitment.
