Government PTI and PET recruitment explained

A Physical Training Instructor or Physical Education Teacher in government service is recruited through a formal, published process — never through an agent and never for a fee. Understanding that process is the difference between a candidate who is ready when the notification appears and one who spends the application window collecting documents.

Who recruits

• State recruitment boards and public service commissions: the largest source of PTI posts, at primary, upper primary and secondary level.
• Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS): PET posts in Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country.
• Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS): PET and Art and PE posts in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.
• Sainik Schools, Army Public Schools and Railway schools: recruited through their own boards.
• Municipal and local body education departments and state sports schools and hostels.

Eligibility

• D.P.Ed or C.P.Ed for primary and upper primary posts in several states.
• B.P.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution for secondary level posts; M.P.Ed for senior secondary and above.
• The relevant state teacher eligibility test where the recruitment rules require it.
• Age limits as specified in the notification, with relaxation for reserved categories.
• Domicile requirements in some state recruitments.
• Medical fitness, and in many cases minimum height and chest standards for specific posts.

The selection stages

• Written examination: physical education theory, teaching methodology, general knowledge, current sports affairs, reasoning and the state's language and general studies papers where prescribed. Most candidates are eliminated here.
• Physical efficiency or proficiency test: typically running, a jump event and a throw event, with standards varying by state and gender. Usually qualifying in nature, but some states include it in the merit.
• Sports certificate weightage: marks for district, state, national or international level participation, granted only against verified original certificates.
• Document verification: NCTE recognition of your degree, category certificate and domicile are checked here.
• Interview or demonstration lesson: included in some recruitments, particularly KVS and NVS.
• Final merit list and appointment.

A preparation plan that works

• Build the theory base over months, not weeks. Work through anatomy and physiology, fitness components, training methods, sports psychology, rules and dimensions of major games, and the history of physical education.
• Read one year of sports current affairs. Olympic, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and national championship results, and major awards such as Khel Ratna, Arjuna and Dronacharya.
• Solve previous year papers of the exact recruitment board. Each board has its own pattern; generic practice is far less effective.
• Train continuously. Physical standards cannot be manufactured in the last month, and injuries acquired in panic training end candidatures.
• Verify your degree's NCTE recognition now. Discovering the problem at document verification is too late.
• Watch official notifications only. Apply through the official portal, keep the registration number and payment receipt, and ignore anyone promising a post for money.
