Taekwondo coaching in a school setting
School taekwondo is not a full combat club session squeezed into 35 minutes. Contact, protective equipment and the age of the group decide everything. The notes below come from school and academy work; they are not a substitute for your national federation’s instructor rules.
Class structure (40 minutes)
- Bow, attendance, jewellery check (5 min).
- Pulse-raising and joint mobility; then kicks on the spot without a partner (8 min).
- Technique of the day on pads or a bag if available (12 min).
- Poomsae / pattern practice or a non-contact game (10 min).
- Stretch, reminder of next grading item (5 min).
Safety non-negotiables
- No full-contact sparring in a crowded school hall without mats, head guards, and a qualified supervisor ratio.
- Kicks to the head are a demonstration skill, not a lunch-break activity.
- Water and a stop rule for dizziness.
Grading
School “belts” that are not registered with a recognised body confuse parents. If you run a school module, call it a skill level (1–4) unless you are actually affiliated and using official kup/dan procedures.
From school demo to championship
A championship needs weigh-in, categories, a draw, and medical cover. The public side of one such event is the Alwar Cup portal. Organisation theory: tournament checklist.
