How to get the most out of previous year papers

Previous year question papers are the most accurate guide to the CBSE Class 12 Physical Education board exam that exists, because they are the exam. The syllabus tells you the scope; the papers tell you the depth, the phrasing and the mark distribution. Used properly, six or seven past papers are worth more than a dozen readings of the textbook.

Questions that repeat almost every year

Across recent sessions, a predictable core of topics appears in almost every paper. Securing these gives you a substantial block of marks before you touch anything else.

• Fixtures: knock-out and league fixtures, calculation of byes, number of matches, seeding.
• Postural deformities: kyphosis, lordosis, scoliosis, flat foot, knock knees and bow legs, with causes and corrective measures.
• Yoga for lifestyle diseases: asanas prescribed for obesity, diabetes, asthma, hypertension and back pain, with benefits and contraindications.
• Sports nutrition: balanced diet, macro and micro nutrients, hydration, pitfalls of dieting and weight management.
• Physiology and injuries: effects of exercise on the muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, classification of injuries and the RICE procedure.
• Biomechanics: Newton's three laws with sporting examples, friction, projectile and levers.
• Test and measurement: Barrow three-item general motor ability test, Rockport one-mile walk test, Senior Citizen Fitness Test, Johnson Metheny test.
• Psychology: personality types, motivation techniques, self-esteem and coping strategies.

A four-week plan using past papers

• Week 1: revise Units 1 to 3 and attempt the questions from those units in three different past papers.
• Week 2: revise Units 4 to 6 and repeat the same unit-wise extraction.
• Week 3: revise Units 7 to 10, then attempt two complete papers in a strict three-hour sitting.
• Week 4: attempt one full paper every alternate day, mark it the same evening, and spend the remaining days only on the diagrams, definitions and asana lists you got wrong.

Marking your own paper

Mark against the syllabus points, not against how much you wrote. Award yourself the mark only if the key term is present. Record every lost mark against its unit, and by the third paper you will have an exact map of your weaknesses — which is the entire purpose of the exercise. Also check the physical presentation: numbered points, underlined key terms, and labelled diagrams drawn in pencil.
