Unit 6: Test and Measurement in Sports

CBSE Class 12 Physical Education Notes

Introduction

Test, Measurement and Evaluation are essential tools in Physical Education and Sports. They help teachers, coaches and sports scientists assess the performance, fitness, skills and abilities of athletes. Through scientific testing procedures, strengths and weaknesses can be identified and suitable training programs can be designed. Without proper testing and evaluation, it becomes difficult to measure improvement or compare performances.

In modern sports, every athlete undergoes various fitness tests, skill tests and performance evaluations. These assessments provide objective data that helps in improving performance and achieving sporting excellence.

Meaning of Test

A test is a tool, procedure or instrument used to collect information regarding a specific ability, characteristic or skill. It provides a systematic method for assessing performance.

Example: 50 Meter Sprint Test is used to measure speed.

Meaning of Measurement

Measurement refers to the process of collecting quantitative data obtained through tests. It involves assigning numerical values to performance.

Measurement provides exact information regarding physical fitness, sports skills, body composition and performance level.

Example: Recording the time taken to complete a 50 Meter Sprint.

Meaning of Evaluation

Evaluation is the process of interpreting measurement results and making judgments about performance. It helps determine whether the objectives have been achieved.

Evaluation helps teachers and coaches make decisions regarding training, selection and performance improvement.

Importance of Test, Measurement and Evaluation

Principles of Evaluation

A good evaluation system should be fair, scientific and capable of providing accurate results. The collected information should help improve sports performance.

Physical Fitness Test

Physical fitness tests are used to assess different components of fitness such as strength, endurance, flexibility, speed and agility. These tests provide valuable information about an individual's physical condition.

Major Components of Physical Fitness

Chair Stand Test

The Chair Stand Test measures lower body strength. The participant repeatedly stands up and sits down from a chair within a specified time period.

Arm Curl Test

This test measures upper body strength. Participants perform maximum arm curls using a fixed weight within 30 seconds.

Chair Sit and Reach Test

This test measures lower body flexibility. The participant sits on a chair and attempts to reach toward the toes while keeping the leg straight.

Back Scratch Test

The Back Scratch Test is used to assess upper body flexibility. The participant tries to touch or overlap the middle fingers behind the back. It is especially useful for assessing shoulder flexibility.

8 Foot Up and Go Test

This test measures agility and dynamic balance. The participant stands up from a chair, walks around a cone placed 8 feet away and returns to sit on the chair. The time taken is recorded.

Senior Citizen Fitness Test (Rikli and Jones Test)

The Senior Citizen Fitness Test was developed by Roberta Rikli and Jessie Jones to assess the functional fitness of older adults. It evaluates strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and agility.

Test Purpose
Chair Stand Test Lower Body Strength
Arm Curl Test Upper Body Strength
Chair Sit and Reach Lower Body Flexibility
Back Scratch Test Upper Body Flexibility
8 Foot Up and Go Agility and Balance
6 Minute Walk Test Aerobic Endurance

Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is a commonly used method for assessing body weight in relation to height. It helps determine whether an individual is underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese.

Formula:

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height² (m²)

BMI Classification

BMI Category
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 - 24.9 Normal Weight
25 - 29.9 Overweight
30 and Above Obese

Waist Hip Ratio (WHR)

Waist Hip Ratio is used to assess body fat distribution and health risk. It is calculated by dividing waist circumference by hip circumference.

WHR = Waist Circumference ÷ Hip Circumference

Skinfold Measurement

Skinfold measurement is a technique used to estimate body fat percentage. A skinfold caliper is used to measure the thickness of subcutaneous fat at different body sites.
